Compassion

There are many things we can each do to spread kindness, peace and compassion. One of the most important things we can teach our children is to be kind to themselves and to all sentient beings.

As a consumer, you have the power to choose products and services that promote compassion. Here are some ways you can make a difference:

  • Eat a vegan diet. There are a myriad of benefits to eating vegan.  Many tasty alternatives to animal flesh, eggs and dairy exist at just about every grocery store. Billions of animals would be saved and the world's hungry could be fed. The American Dietetic Association recognizes a vegan diet as being healthy for all stages of life.
  • Purchase products that are cruelty-free (not tested on animals). Find out which companies do and do not test on animals at www.caringconsumer.org
  • Stand against dissecting animals. Many computer models now exist. Learn how you can refuse to dissect in the classroom at www.aavs.org
  • Don't buy fur or fur trim, or other animal-derived products. There is no reason to wear fur, leather, suede, silk, down (feather) or wool clothing since many cruelty-free alternatives exist.
  • Support non-animal entertainment, such as Cirque du Soleil, and don't participate in sport hunting.
  • Neuter and spay your companion animals. Millions of healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized each year in animal shelters and city pounds due to lack of space and lack of funds. Neutering and spaying is the easiest, most effective way to stop the overpopulation and prevent unwanted pets from ending up on "death row."
